DIY Beach Luau Party

For brothers Andrew and Kevin, summers by the lake lack only one thing: a beach. In Episode 5, they set out to rectify that situation in their quest to host the Ultimate Beach Party.  Sand, a tiki bar, open fire spit and tropical cocktails are just the start of a Brojects-style beach party. And with May 2-4 weekend just around the corner, here are 5 DIY ways to turn your next outdoor celebration into a funky DIY beach luau party!

1. DIY Drink Cozies – You don’t need to be overly crafty to get these done. All you really need is some old beer cozies and a pair of scissors. In fact, you can even assign the project to the kids!  Just tell them Daddy needs a fun grass skirt to keep his beers cold!

2. DIY Tiki Torches If you want your afternoon beach luau party to carry over into the night, you’ll need a) some light and b) something to help keep away the mosquitos!  Here’s the solution. Grab some empty Mason Jars, buy a bottle of tiki citronella torch oil, puncture a whole in the top of the metal lid, and thread an oil soaked wick through the hole. Just be careful to place your new tiki torches in areas where the kids can’t access them or people can’t accidentally knock them over.

3. The Pina Colada — Yeah, we’re just going to go ahead and leave this here…

  • 4 oz. fresh pineapple juice
  • 3 oz. rum
  • 2 oz. coconut cream
  • 2 cups crushed ice

Pour all of the ingredients into a blender. Blend briefly at high speed. Pour into a sliced coconut or pineapple and serve. Garnish with a slice of fresh pineapple and a cute little umbrella.

4. Limbo Pole – No luau party is complete without a limbo contest. Grab a long 2×4, a hockey stick, or to keep with the theme pick up an inexpensive bamboo pole at a hardware store and get ready to go as low as you can go!  If you’re anything like Kevin or Andrew you may even turn it into a high stakes competition. Just remember to set aside your prettiest lei to crown the winner in true tropical fashion.

5. BBQ Kebobs – We figured a spit roast might not be for everyone, so instead of a whole pig turning over an open fire, let’s just go with skewers. In this episode, Andrew uses his Makita drill to make his rotisserie turn. Just follow his lead, then kick back and feast!
