The Ultimate Floating Sauna
The chilly weather at their lakeside cottage property has brothers Andrew and Kevin opening their minds and their pores to the ceremony of sweat that is the sauna. But knowing the bros, it’s not just going to be any old sauna – not when Andrew insists that the key to a truly amazing sauna is the ability to jump from the heat directly into the cold lake. They conclude that the only sensible thing to do is to make a sauna with immediate access to the deepest, coldest parts of the lake – the Ultimate Floating Sauna.
Step 3
Building a sauna from scratch is definitely an ambitious project. We were lucky to have a couple of docks and a wood burning stove already available from previous builds. Everything else we’ll require is listed below, and much of it is available from our nearest building supplies or hardware store:
• Dock floats
In case your sauna needs extra support, like ours did.
• Lumber
We suggest you use the lumber calculator included with the Brojects App (free for iPhone and iPad) to calculate the amount you will need.
• Sauna rocks
Igneous rocks are best. Don’t use any old rocks lying about the property and especially not river rocks. When heated, even small amounts of water trapped inside will cause these rocks to explode.
• Chimney and parts
For venting the wood stove out the top of our sauna.
• Curtain rod
• Curtain
For your change room.
• Firewood
• Piano hinges
For our full-size swing-out doors.
• Caulking
For sealing up our sauna, keeping in steam and keeping out leaks.
• Corrugated steel roofing
